| It was raining toys, courtesy of the 7th SFG (GALLERY, VIDEO)EGLIN AFB â As a gesture of goodwill, Army Sgt. Gene Denney strapped a 40-pound parachute to his back Wednesday morning and stepped out the cargo door of a plane into the open air. guild wars 2 gold He and more than 200 soldiers from the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) had arrived at the airfield earlier that morning armed not with guns and ammo, but with toy trucks, dolls and stuffed animals for the groupâs annual Christmas toy drive and parachute jump. gw2 gold The donated items, which included several bicycles, go to Toys for Tots to provide Christmas gifts to families that cannot afford them. gw2 gold See video of the drop. âAll kids deserve a good Christmas,â Denny said. âIâve got a couple kids at home. Iâd like to know that if we needed it there would be someone out there that would do the same for us.â A C-130 circled all morning at about 1,250 feet and dropped groups of 10 soldiers at a time. They were attached to a static line that automatically pulled their chutes as they stepped out of the plane. The key to the landing is to keep your feet and knees pressed together to hit the ground first and then to roll the rest of your body down, calves, thighs then back, said Denney, who has had about 20 jumps in his career. âIt was the same as every other jump; really scary but really fun,â he said after landing in the drop zone. The 7th Group soldiers jump regularly to keep up with proficiency requirements. However, Wednesdayâs jump was special because of the toy drive and because a Colombian jump master came along to allow them to earn foreign flight wings for their dress uniforms. It was also the first time the 7th Group has held the toy drive in Northwest Florida. It was an annual tradition before the move from Fort Bragg, N.C., in 2011. Col. Robert Kirila, the 7th Groupâs deputy commander and one of the first jumpers Wednesday, said the toy drive is a great way to reach out to the community. âThis community has done so much for us since even before we got here, and they continue to do so much for our children, for our spouses and for us,â Kirila said. âThe support has been spectacular. This is least we can do to give back.â Contact Daily News Staff Writer Lauren Sage Reinlie at 850-315-4443 or . Follow her on Twitter @LaurenRnwfdn. xboter 2014 |
